New Zealand Spinach is a half-hardy annual, a native of New Zealand, sometimes used as a substitute for Spinach during the summer months, but decidedly inferior to it. It is unrelated to the Spinach, belonging to the Picoideae. When cultivated in this country, seeds are sown in March on a gentle hot-bed. They must be previously steeped in water for several hours. The seedlings should be potted and placed in a frame till the end of May and then planted out in light, rich soil. Only the young leaves are gathered for use, a succession being produced during summer and autumn. See:
